Jars of Herbs

Vintage seed catalogs are always full of wonderful drawings of vegetables. In this case, I found this wonderful drawing of jars of herbs. The seed catalog that I found this drawing in was Peter Henderson & ?o’s tested seed catalog from 1891.

In this drawing we have a shelf full of jars of herbs. The seed company sold a wonderful assortment of seeds for everything from anise to wormwood – an herb recommended for poultry grounds. The most interesting herb seed and description was that for Henbane which was listed as being “used as an opiate.” No wonder it’s not included in today’s seed catalogs. It may not have been all that popular in 1891 either as it is not included among the jars of herbs shown on the shelf in this drawing.
